There is one little filter that cleans the air before it enters into the humidifier, but other than that there is none. It doesn't touch the water. I have used these humidifiers to put in about 3 drops of essential oil to broadcast through my home daily. They work wonderfully. They are much cheaper than the expensive machines made for essential oils & I think they do a better job. I have been using these humidifiers for years.
